It is friday night, but I have no plans. I didn’t want to cook but was craving real food. In Alexandria the choices are endless; Indian, Mexican, Thai, but all I wanted was something basic. Everyday I pass Rustico, “the pizza place”. However, it is also known as Rustico, “the beer place”. Only thing is I’m not a big beer drinker. Despite traveling to Germany, the land of beer, I never got converted. Food is more important to me. Rustico is one of the first resturants I discovered when I first moved from MD. Everytime I went I got pizza, except one time I got the chicken and it reminded me of home. Then, Rustico became, ‘a good food place”. The chicken has a nice smoky flavor and the skin was not soggy, very delicious! Comes with creamed spinach and fingerling potatoes for a well rounded meal. Other favorites are the truffle fries… Yum! Note: I could not eat half of the food given, very generous.
Another neighborhood favorite is right across the street. Buzz, a cafe and one of the best bakeries IMHO. I go for cupcakes every week as a treat to myself. The red velvet are my favorite but the 9:30 club, a improvement on the hostess chocolate cupcake with a rich ganache, is a close second. Overall this foodie loves her neighborhood.
